Time ....so precious
It's Thanksgiving tomorrow and I have time to write a blog. I guess that says a lot. The only thing I'm looking for in the 4 day break from routine life is some rest and some fun to go along with it. Travelling? Me?....absolutely not as I plan to wear my PJ's all day ,rest my feet on the recliner and forget the time. I have been collecting a few books in the past year and they deserve to be read in peace.I hope to find that peace in the next few days.
I had been busy with an assignment for the past 3 months and have almost finished it. Working on it all the time subconsciously has indeed exhausted me and now I am waiting for the results. But till then my goal is to keep myself distracted and not think about it.So what am I thinking to keep myself distracted??.....Here's a choice list
-Shopping....mmmmm....yea shopping rocks especially in thnxgiving!
-Read the books on my shelf....yea why not
-Bake! Bake ! I lovvee baking......cupcakes?
-Cook....YES! Buy a new Crock Pot....and experiment with the recipes.By December holidays...hope to be a pro with a few recipes.
-Improve my cardio fitness.....yea....yea...not bad.
-Not to forget...Mamma Mia and Lion King....NOT TO BE MISSED!!!
-If it snows....Shovel my car out ;-)
Now with enough things to do, I just realized I AM a BUSY person.2009 is almost done and I have absolutely no idea how it flew by. The time that we have is so precious but we hardly acknowledge it. I was distracted for most of the year and the year passed by as if I was in a daze. It's winter again and the talks for a next conference have surfaced again. I see myself staring at things which I think I just did. But clearly things around me are different and remind me of the time. The time that is so precious but wasted...by me? Wasted doing what?
But I hope to use my time wisely henceforth. At least not waste it by being in a daze.My list of things to do will keep me busy and the new plans I wish to materialize will keep me hopeful.
Use time wisely!!

Seeking Happiness
I am writing back again after ages. The reason....I was plain busy. Anything interesting?....No the same old life but trying to live it the exciting way.
Some things needed some extra attention....like my LC machine for one which has been down for a month now.My car....dents just happen and need to be fixed and third ...myself.To get on with a normal life and balancing out the work-personal time tug of war, ultimately got myself enrolled in a swanky gym in the neighborhood.
Diwali was fun and hoping to have a good Thanksgiving. Nothing fancy... no guests I look forward to having, nothing thrilling. But trying not to be gloomy. As someone aptly said about me," You seek unhappiness....get over things"
Not that I took that comment to heart or 100% believed in it but yea I 'm keeping up with my life and not letting boredom drown me. And if you call that seeking happiness....then yes I am seeking happiness :-)

Life is beautiful
I wonder to how many friends have I told that I love and miss Mumbai everyday of my life. I do and I will. But there is a new addition to that list. I'll miss Boston if I ever leave it. I will. I know. I am getting used to Boston and the cute routine we have here. Friday evenings at 4 P Rd are a ritual and we all wait for that Friday evening where we regulars meet and just chat about our week.It lasts for 2 hrs max, 10 pm and everyone has either left or I am dozing in my bed with my buddies still chatting along.I hardly remember walking them out to the door most of the times as I am the first one to doze off:){Friday evenings aren't made for me to be awake}
You tube acts as our jukebox and every Friday evening I spend with my 'regulars' with no pretence, in my pajamas, caring the least about my 'zombied' appearance till their chatter puts me to sleep. This is my kind of Friday and we hope to have such for a long long time.

A lazy Sunday afternoon
I am writing this blog on a Sunday afternoon . I want to just laze around and bother about nothing but there are still chores to be done. Browsing through the music I have, I am trying to find some soothing music...something that'll help me relax. I have tried about 10 songs of different types but nothing suits my taste. Then somehow a playlist I had made long time back starts playing and there I have my songs which calm be down in an instant. Any guesses which ones??

KK and RD Burman ...my saviors and the album that soothed me : 'Kati Patang' .I am surprised as to how can the music of a film released even before I was born could have such an effect on me. Maybe its the music of some music maestros which lasts forever. 'Ye shaam mastani' , 'Ye jo mohabbat hai' and 'Pyaar deewana hota hai' takes me to a different relaxing trance which is not attained by any other album. I am now getting back to my chores before I need a kick of a good coffee to get me going.
Here's the video from youtube but though I dislike Rajesh Khanna , I still love the music. So here's song of the day

Step out of that comfort zone
There were many things I was thinking about in the past few years.I wanted to do a few things but I had put them on hold. Living in a comfort zone becomes a habit and when it does you start to stagnate. Not just physically tied down to a routine but mentally your ideas stagnate. Mine did and that lead to frustration. Imagine a tiger in a cage or worst a bird in a cage.Ever got that feeling of your wings being clipped? That is how I would explain being physically tied down but having given up on the idea to escape from that cage would be the end. In the past few months I realized that I would near my end prematurely if I did not step out of my comfort zone.
I have started doing things which were put on hold. I am making attempts to step out of my comfort zone. Giving that head above my shoulders some thinking , planning, organizing to do and teaching my heart to be brave to endure the decisions that have to be taken.
I have realized being brave and doing things are necessary to save oneself of guilt, shame , low self esteem and worst , from tolerating the nuisance of over inflated self esteems around oneself.
The scoop: In the recent past I confessed to somethings :) Now don't start imagining things . Nothing noteworthy or consequential in my current life (if it was , I would let you guys know) But important never the less. I stepped out of my comfort zone. It felt good. I let out the truth. I was brave. I am not always but then I was. The conversation which then followed made us realize that not being brave had led to missed opportunities and absolutely tangent unforeseen lifestyles( This has reference to some incidents a couple of years back) But anyways that one small step out of the comfort zone created a difference forever....for the good.
If you read my blog, I would like you to comment if you have stepped out of your comfort zone and done something. Maybe you wouldn't want to divulge the details but a comment would make me happy :)

Still wandering....not just me

In the last week, surprisingly I got in touch with many people from my school to med school days. Its been good to know that some are doing very well whereas there are some who like me are still wandering. Someone lost a very close family member, some one is expecting a baby, some one is taking exams , some one passed some exams, some one is just not in touch....hard to find.
Life has turned out to be different for everyone as expected but I was glad to know that people are still elated to get in touch with each other after having no news of one another for a long time. Another important thing I realized was that people are brave. They all in some or the other way have tried to overcome their difficulties in the paths they have chosen. May it be studying long hours with lost contact with the real world or trying to adjust in their married life trying to build a career they always wanted inspite of being discouraged by the extended family in every possible way. For some it has been a ride to the other end of the world or for some to sign some papers of losing their next of kin in the same hospital they spent 7.5 years of their life learning medicine and saving other lives.
Life is ironic and has been ironic around me for the past many years and I wished I knew better words to put it down . No logic, rationalization or practical approach has proved fruitful in avoiding some events in life. I have dealt with my share of events with every bit of honesty and righteousness I have in me and in the past few days I got to know that my dear friends have dealt their shares with every bit of courage in them. I feel belittled when I see them dealing with greater problems in life with resilience I could never probably have. People around me never fail to amaze me by their strength and I pray they overcome their hurdles soon.I am glad I know a few brave people who treat life as it should be .....'PRECIOUS'!
BE BRAVE, HAVE THE COURAGE TO LIVE LIFE!

June Rocks

Today's day deserves a blog. June 3rd 2009 ! My excitement reached a higher level today thanks to the good news from family and friends in the past 2 days. One after the other friends and family have been conveying about great things happening in their life and I am absolutely ecstatic for them.
It started with a close friend , though not a classmate but a senior I met in med school telling me that he passed his super speciality exams and that he was a Nephrologist at last! Med School, 3 yrs of post graduation and then the last 3 years of rigorous super speciality training in one of the best and busiest hospitals in Mumbai. An academic feat achieved by sheer perseverance. Hats off to such who pursue education to its limit so they could make a difference. For those who think Medicos are egoistic and pursue knowledge for the title and its grandiosity kindly note that though egoistic, it is this pursuit of education which leads to a scientific breakthrough in tomorrow's world of medicine.
Then came the news of my closest cousin and his wife being blessed with a baby daughter. Now why am I super excited?? First of all its the beginning of a new generation in our family and secondly this cousin of mine has been the closest to being a brother to me. Spending months of summer vacation together, to riding on his bike with him or sitting on the front seat of his car till he was married...it was me who got the preference :) Naturally, I am super excited for him and his wife.
Third the mail from a friend of our Friday night group announcing that the vacation he was on in Mumbai is turning out to be a wedding for him ! I almost fell out of my chair when I read that !!
FOR AM: "When you read this blog later......trust me you'll have a hearty laugh:)
I was super shocked and was laughing hard!!! It was pretty amusing.....'cos we remember teasing you that when you come back you might be married :)))..Some things ...so come true!"
Plus my dearest friend would be celebrating her birthday at the end of the month and I so wish I were there for all the fun that June has to offer. Nevertheless, my best wishes are with all my loved ones and I wish for more good things to happen in their lives and thus in a way make me happy and proud!

Maine trip and its after effects
Yea, I had a great active weekend after a long ,ever lasting, sad and disappointing winter. The weekend in Maine felt like life was up and running. The cool blue water, the orange lobsters and the greenest of the green tree leaves were good enough reasons to make me feel better. Irrespective of the long tedious drives I still managed to have a good time with jet ski's and cook outs. The group was a balanced one with everyone helping out in every way they could. Reshma's desi chaai in the evening on the deck by the water will be remembered for a very long time. Though I missed out on some music for 3 days, I am back on to it with my songs to be played in the car all lined up and I''ll be glad to be able to listen to them :)
With reference to my earlier blog about sitting back and relaxing, this trip was in conjunction to that thought. I sat back and took pictures ( one of my other hobbies) and I am glad they came out better than Iexpected. Never knew I was a good photographer, I just knew I liked it. Between a Cannon S3 (12x zoom) and Kodak Easy Share (3x) zoom I guess I did pretty well and hoping to own a SLR soon. But not before I have some lessons in digital photography and have mastered my S3 .
Other revalations on the trip: My sister is not only 'NOT SCARED' of dogs...but she actually likes them ! Even the big dogs on the jet ski docks.Hmmmm....
Onkar cooks well.
Shreyas can take good pics :)
Tarang can instigate people to do right/wrong things :)
Reshma can make people put down their glass of drink :)
An after-party is already planned and we hope to relive our memories together again.

Sit back and relax
I haven't felt like writing a blog for the past few days. Reason: I am sitting back and relaxing.
Trying too hard everyday to achieve many things in a limited time or living your life in fast forward is what I have been doing in the past few days. Its same as skimming through an article in the news paper editorial or taking a GRE/GMAT language exercise where you are skimming through an article in a rush . Consequence: You don't remember what you read few minutes or hours later. But the same article read in a relaxed manner would cause much retention.
Similarly , I want to be able to recollect my days I spend this summer when I think about them later in the harsh winter days in Boston. And how am I doing it? By letting go. Not multitasking . Not planning. Letting things happen at their own pace. When I am watching TV, as a rule my laptop is put away to sleep. When I am writing a blog or surfing, the TV is switched off. When I am talking to some one , other things are put away. Justice is what I am doing....justice to the time I have now and the moment I am in.
Yes multitasking is what you are expected of in this hectic life, but it leads to sub-conscious stress. Something building in you day by day not realized by you. I was trying to find out the reason of my stress for many days; almost 8 months when I thought maybe I was overdoing everything. Trying too hard....just too hard.

Tum Bin
Tum Bin.....Now how many people remember this movie. Released on 13 July 2001, this movie written and directed by Anubhav Sinha may haven't received many awards or got noticed because there was no superstar having a lead role but this movie is a very good movie with mostly newcomers and I would put this one on my 'Must Watch' list.
A very good love story with a smooth flowing drama .....(mind you not 'melodrama' as most SRK movies are) the actors Sandali Sinha, Priyanshu Chatterjee, Rakesh Bapat and Himanshu Malik have absolutely justified their characters on screen (Kindly do not blame their Make Up artist , dress designer and Choreographer's poor quality work on the actors)
The music score of this film by Nikhil- Vinay is one of my all time favorites and most probably can have every song for every mood. 'Tum Bin Jiya Jaye Kaise....' is a beautiful song with excellent lyrics and I listen to it often. ' Koi fariyad....' by Jagjit Singh is melodious and 'Pyar hum ko hone laga' by Abhijeet and Chitra and 'Tumhare siva' by Anuradha Paudwal and Udit Narayan are easy listening numbers too.
Now before you think I am into mushy romantic movies, let me tell you that I dislike King Khan and he's responsible for more than 90% of the audience to believe that romantic movies have to be teary eyed, heart wrenching, melodramatic , sissy movies! Tum Bin is far far better than most SRK movies and really classy. And for all those guys who make a face when they are dragged to a romantic movie by their spouses, please take a break and watch TUM BIN.

Ain't I super?

Have you ever tried to find on google the distance between your heart and brain?Calculating realistically , one might say between 25 - 30 cms. Try holding a ruler in front of your face, in a standing position and it'll give you an idea, roughly. You don't have to be a doctor to measure something like that because if you are one like me, you'll end up with a different number. For me, the distance between my heart and brain is 7,626 miles or 12,273 kms equivalent to 6,627 nautical miles.
And if you are still wondering how, the answer is simple. I googled :)
As you can see ,because the distance is so long, the communication between my heart and brain takes some time. On most occasions, the communication either ends up in getting a busy tone or ends up in a voice mail. Many a times it's also unreachable and sometimes gets back on track with a recharge of a few dollars (how cheap). Many a times the brain wants to let the heart know something very important but the heart sleeps while the brain works.Absolutely out of sync but I still live.Supreme of all beings as I am I achieve this scientific feat everyday.Other organisms need blood vessels to survive but I need electric and networking lines to be alive . Ain't I super!
You might be wondering what kind of a being am I who doesn't have it's heart and brain at the same place.Which organism scientifically known can exist like that. Trust me , you wouldn't find that on google :) But I know the answer and I bet you can guess too as one needn't be Charles Darvin to explain evolution.
Beings like us evolved long time back and as every evolution began with the survival of the fittest so did my species.I am supreme of the super being. I can survive with a dissociated heart and brain and even minimal communication is enough for me to live.I eat, drink, sleep and feel like the others of my kind. The only difference is I am displaced from my original place of dwelling to a different one and during the long distance transfer by Lufthansa, my heart and brain dissociated. They weren't shipped in the same package and since then they have always been apart. Don't you worry though! I am still alive, thanks to the engineers who keep my heart beating and brain all wired up albeit some short - circuits here and there. As long as those wires work, I work. And as long as my brain and heart long to be together,I'll live.Ain't I super!
Now even after reading this jibberish if you are wondering which species I belong to....you dont have to google!
The answer is here - I am the ever complicated and evolved 'whuman' (woman +human) who has learned to live rather co exist with the environment around her.
:) Life is always beautiful,It's you who should learn to appreciate it ;)

Quote of the day
Ambrose Bierce:
Love: a temporary insanity, curable by marriage.
I hold it true, whate'er befall;
I feel it, when I sorrow most;
'Tis better to have loved and lost
Than never to have loved at all.
Gravitation is not responsible for people falling in love.

........As time goes by
Anyone who has seen Casablanca would recognize this song sung by Frank Sinatra. Ingrid Bergman's face on that black and white screen on a close up shot makes me marvel at her beauty. Humphrey Bogart with 'Here's looking at you kid' is an all time classic character with a memorable performance indeed.
Quotes: 'Play it Sam. Play... As Time Goes By'
You must remember this, a kiss is still a kiss....a sigh is just a sigh...the fundamental things apply..la la la.....

Cheers to old friends!
God!
It's one of those days again.....where I miss being in Mumbai and just even the mention of that place makes my heart skip a beat. Today I had a chat with Ashwin (who's in New York now) and talked to Desma yesterday and all those memories of Mumbai came rushing in. Its great to talk to an old friend who's seen you in your true self and remembers you exactly as you were. Few minutes of talk and both my conversations were vivid images of us being together in our hospital canteen where we had the conversations of a lifetime around the shaky plastic table over cups of coffee as the clock ticked away. Those were the times when real ambitions and aspirations shaped up and I am glad to know we all are trying our best to implement what we once aspired to be.
Life is beautiful and these friends make me appreciate it everyday. I am proud to have brave and courageous friends who none the less are 'Doctors' with great character and resilience. I am happy to see the way we have grown and progressed from being medical school students to not just doctors but individuals with a 'Never say Die ' attitude.
I dedicate this blog to all my co - medicos who in their own little and big ways have contributed to shaping up my understanding of Life and Medicine.
Wishing all my dear friends all the very best for their exams.

Mumbai:The place where someone's thinking about you is what you call HOME -I
The title.....is not original :) Its picked up from my favourite anime 'NARUTO' now running its 2nd sequence 'NARUTO SHIPPUDEN' (on TV Tokyo, Japan , Thursday nights 9 pm :) )
When I think about home there 's never a second thought and like a vision I see Mumbai.Mumbai at its best glory during the festivals or the quietest near dawn when either you can say its fallen asleep or just waking up to go on the run. Anyone who has lived in Mumbai, travelled on the trains or just walked on the roads trying to make your way through a sea of people will never in one's life forget as to what it is or once was to be a Mumbaikar.
During my Med School days at LTMMC aka Sion hospital ,I came face to face with Mumbai. The real nasty city , the bully but with a heart. There was never a time in the casualty duties that we had that we didn't see some drama. But it's not what happens inside a hospital that I'm writing about . I am writing about Mumbai seen by an Intern then in 2003 standing on the footpath outside the hospital at 4.30 - 5.00 am drinking a cup of coffee with my Casualty Officer (and now close friend , Ashwin) that the Anna on the cycle got from some god forsaken place( I still wonder how I never fell sick). The Eastern Express Highway outside the hospital which is a herculean task to drive on a normal day in Mumbai would be quiet with some taxis and private vehicles speeding by. Speeding by :)
The average time taken from Sion Circle to Sion hospital any given day by car is 40 odd minutes in the traffic and walking 12- 14 minutes at a leisurely pace :) . At that hour near dawn vehicles would actually speed by . That's the hour you can see and listen to the city in a real sense without the presence and chatter of zillions of people and their languages not to mention the vehicles and the honking of horns.
I remember the Intern's Cruise ( farewell party) we had which started and docked back at the mesmerizing Gateway of India with the ever beautiful Taj Hotel overlooking the dark black muddy waters at the gateway. The walk back of about 25 - 30 of us from Gateway to VT station at about 4 am on the streets of Mumbai was hardly an opportunity that everyone in Mumbai got. Not to mention how dangerous it was. But we did do it and that's the time when I actually saw how big the sidewalks were and how great the architecture of the buildings was .
When I think of Mumbai today these places rush to my mind in a chaotic kind of a slide show:
Kala Ghoda, Rhythm House, Khyber restaurant....the book vendors, the BEST buses, the yellow - black taxis, some weird foreigners wearing flowing ghaagraas in the sweltering heat of Mumbai, the street urchins, the paan wallahs....and how can you ever see and not remember Victoria Terminus ( CST now)and the BMC headquarters.
.....JJ Hospital, Byculla station, Marine Drive, Jazz by the Bay....and the Pizzeria.....Girgaum Chowpatty and the walking bridge over it, Wilson College, Walkeshwar, Worli Seaface, Worli Dairy and the dairy stall outside it where we went every year bunking lectures on the day it rained to just to experience the waves crashing on the rocks at the seaface...:) :)
Vishal, Desma, Sandeep,Trupti and others....I will never ever forget those rainy days in Mumbai at the Worli Seaface ever! :)
Siddhivinayak temple, Shivaji Park......Vile Parle, Juhu, Ram krishna.....There's no way I am finishing this list because its not just a city its a world out there.
This blog is by no way disrespecting any other city in the world or the sentiments of other people from different cities, its just re kindling the memories of anyone who has lived in Mumbai and misses being away from it. I do and always will till I am not back at the place where some one is thinking of me .......Mumbai.
Be brave,

PS: Expect more on Mumbai in my blog :)
